Stocks retreat, giving up early gains

Stocks turned mixed Wednesday morning, giving up gains, as investors stepped back a bit after the previous session's rally despite better-than-expected earnings from Morgan Stanley and news that regulators will allow Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to buy more home loans.
