Re: [nndl] The compassionate conservatives of Hyde Park strike again

Wow, the patronizing explanations never stop in the intellectual mecca of Northfield.  Thanks so much, Sebastian.  I would have never known the definition of xenophobia if you hadn't shared it so generously.  Stop pretending to care deeply about moms pushing their baby strollers up dangerous streets just to push your own agenda from a contrived moral high ground.  I've known you for many years, and I've never heard you express support for any issue affecting moms and their babies until now.

Just because one Rowena resident expressed concern about low-income housing does not mean the entire Hyde Park NA and the Austin City Council were swayed by an individual's fear.

The crime rate HAS increased in Hyde Park and Northfield.  At lease the Hyde Park NA leadership was proactive in acknowledging it and taking steps to make residents safer.  Instead of ignoring the problem and then hinting that preventive measures, such as a Neighborhood Watch and signs, are necessarily xenophobic.

Yes parking is undoubtedly part of their reasoning behind denying access
to pedestrians and bicycles to and from their new neighbor's homes.
However, that is not the only issue.  Here, for example, is a letter
sent to the City Council by Alison Zagby, a resident of Rowena:

>I am concerned that this extreme increase in
>population in the area will also have negative effects
>on the crime rate, especially if affordable housing is
>inserted into the property for the Texas tax breaks.

And here is a quote from Elizabeth Zagby (who apparently lives in Dallas
but owns property on Rowena):

>...the increased parking, traffic (both automobile and
>pedestrian) will completely eliminate the sense of
>privacy and space of this home.

And here is a definition of xenophobia taken from
Webster's:

Xenophobia:  Noun --  an unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or
strangers or of that which is foreign or strange.____________________________________________
