Hi All-

Thanks Laura for your community spirit!

However, the money was donated because it was felt that the neighborhood needed more security. If

the money donated by 1) local businessman- specifically marked for NW signs and 2) a resident- specifically

for NW signs and 3) the NNA- specifically for NW signs,  is not used for NW signs then the money should

be returned to the donors.

The causes you mentioned, Laura, are certainly great causes and it's a bit of a shame that money

doesn't flow as readily for these causes.

I agree- let's not put NW signs next to each other.  We have a huge neighborhood with lots and lots

of corners.  Certainly we can find lots of locations for these signs. Hopefully, the whole neighborhood

will be more secure because of these signs.

Thanks for listening.

Jan

Michelle: Because a sign is already scheduled to go at the intersection Ave F/55 (I would assume on the south-bound, entering the neighborhood), I think that the possibility for a future sign at 55th and Link should be eliminated, as it would post 2 signs basically right next to each other. Link and 55th are not really a gateway to the neighborhood…. If anything else should go on 55th (in addition to the sign already planned), I would suggest either 55th and Guadalupe (but then it would bee too close to the already scheduled nelray/Guadalupe), or…..   Another idea…..  If we decide that we do not need all of  those signs (I mean, 24!!!) we could: a) donate them to other neighborhoods   or b) (my favorite solution) donate the money to buy playground toys for the church on ave F.  our neighborhood does not have a playground, and it would be nice for little children in the neighborhood go play at the church (of course with its permission) I do not have children of “playing age” myself, but I know of a number of families with little kids who can use this in the near future….. It would be nice to walk to the church’s playground, rather than having to drive/bike all the way to Shipe park.   or c) purchase maintenance/plants/watering for the triangle at bruning green.   Do we really need 24 signs?  I personally do not find them al that pretty….with the extra $600 something else can be done…. A playground would draw more residents outside on the streets, walking.  This automatically makes the neighborhood safer. (more eyes around)   laura

Subject: [NNADL] Watch Signs andhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/northfieldwatch/

Hi all,

I wanted to give everyone an update on our Neighborhood Watch efforts, and invite you to check out and JOIN our new website/Yahoo Group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/northfieldwatch/.  It is also linked from the Northfield Neighborhood Association website.

The Watch website includes a list of Block Captains, their contact info/blocks covered, crime prevention tips, APD info, files, forms, and other helpful links.  There are 39 volunteer Block Captains in Northfield.  Feel free to get in touch with your Block Captain if you have concerns about crime and security in the hood.

According to APD stats, the Northfield burglary rate dropped significantly in Nov-Dec (even compared to the previous year).  There were only 13 burglaries in Nov-Dec 2007, compared to 27 burglaries in Sep-Oct 2007.  In Nov-Dec the previous year, there were 23 burglaries.  In addition to key arrests, the recent reduction could be partly attributed to increased awareness and police calls.

Together, the Block Captains raised $540 in donations to purchase 11 street signs.  Neighborhood Watch signs can be a visual deterrent to criminals.  The signs are an indication that neighbors are alert and watching and willing to call police about suspicious activities.  The first batch of signs were installed last week in the following major entry points:

1. E. 51st/Caswell (near Airport)

2. E. 53rd/Martin

3. Martin/Bruning

4. North Loop/Ave F

5. W. 51st/Guadalupe (IF fields)

6. North Loop/Huisache

7. Chesterfield/55th

8. Nelray/Guadalupe

9. 55th/Ave F

10. Guadalupe/55th 1/2

11. Guadalupe/Zennia

In December, a Northfield business owner and another resident made donations totalling $300.  At the January 7 Neighborhood Association meeting, the NNA voted to approve a matching $300 donation.  Thanks to all!

Now we have $600 to buy more signs.  We tentatively discussed installing signs at other entry points.  If you have suggestions, please post a message through the group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/northfieldwatch/ or send me an email.  Here's a list of possibilities:

1. Duval/56th

2. 56th/Middle Fiskville

3. Zennia/Lamar

4. Franklin/Lamar

5. Ave F/51st

6. Ave G/51st

7. Duval/51st

8. Evans/51st

9. Martin/51st

10. Eilers/51st

11. Clarkson/51st

12. 55th/Link
