As long as they are on blank walls and open spaces, are graffiti really a
problem? I understand there are a lot of concerns related to safety, gangs
etc etc., but I actually enjoy seing elaborate graffitis, when they are
placed in otherwise unatractive places. Call me strange, but I feel that
well drawn graffiti might actually enhance the ugly cement banks, bridges,
blind walls etc etc.
Example:
The Hello froggy that appears in photos about austin (in the campus area, by
22nd and guadalupe,
Or another example, the colorful painting at the corner of 24th and
guadalupe.
I do not believe in swastika-like signatures, but a nice large well-made
graffiti (or am I talking about a murale, perhaps) would actually something
I would like in the neighborhood. It gives it character.
If anyone has been in Berlin, (in particular kreuzberg) graffiti can be
beautiful. Or any train station where ugly rusty wagons are covered in
colorful beautifully spraypainted letters and picts. Something mubh better
to look at than a bunch of rusty-grey ugly train convoys.
Perhaps I am being naïve.
Of course no one wants their own property marked and graffitified w/out
their permission..... but if something beautifies an ugly abandoned
space..... anyway, I also understand how other might feel differently and
see graffiti as pure ugliness.
I like the "run-down" stores around north loop. They have character. They
make the neighborhood special. This is why I felt that the endeavor
development would be a trheat to the stores. Because indeed it would look
much "nicer", and because the current owners would consider moving to a
newer, brighter etc etc location. What would happen to the old stores on
north loop? Abandonment? I still remember how the northloop corner used
to look in 1998 or something around there..... I would not want to go back
to that. Anyone remembers?

There is a new thread on I Love North Loop about addressing the
graffiti problem that has gotten so much worse around here lately. If
anyone has any ideas that they would like to contribute to the site,
maybe together we can figure out a solution to this mess.
