We returned from Vancouver on Sunday to discover that someone had broken
into Jen's car by smashing in the passenger side window Saturday night
in order to steal the radio. This happened on Nelray, just east of
Guadalupe. My tenants said they came home around 3am and didn't notice
anything, so presumably it happened some time between 3 and 6am. The
radio cost $90 new 6 years ago; the cost of replacing the window was $210.

As much as people (including me) like to complain about the McDorms, the
better designed ones (read: have a front porch) do have one thing going
for them. The kids sitting out front all night long drinking beer and
smoking pot are crime prevention for a 1/4 block in either direction. I
often get up to go running these days and find that there are other
people on the street still up sitting on the porch drinking beer. It's
kind of discombobulating, but THAT my friends is neighborhood watch.
Someone hanging a little Neighborhood Watch sign in their window before
they go to bed at 9pm ain't doing squat - 1. It might just be worth it
to convince these kids to drink at home on Saturday night by passing out
a few free 6-packs.

Citizen's Arrest

The guy who chased down the perp yelling "Neighborhood Watch" is my neighbor and friend here on 55th St. He is one of the young folks that is often out on the front porch hanging out. He might be crazy; after all, he did chase a criminal down the street, even after the guy pointed at his pocket and said "don't make me use this," then tied him up with his belt til the police came. I might not have done the same myself. But the crime deterrent of having people out and about, looking for suspicious people, is a great thing.

A number of neighbors on 55th street often gather on front porches to have a beer and talk well into the evening. It not only makes me love the neighborhood more, it really is the best kind of neighborhood watch. I'd love to see more houses in our 'hood with expanded front porches. If I ever do a remodel, that'll be part of it.
