I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees. I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues. And I'm asking you, sir, at the top of my lungs-- he was very upset as he shouted and puffed-- What's that THING you've made out of my Truffula tuft?
Look, Lorax, I said. There's no cause for alarm. I chopped just one tree. I am doing no harm. from The Lorax, Dr. Seuss
BE THE LORAX
Friends and Neighbors,
The "business as usual" crowd that has been chopping our trees as fast as they please is now spamming the Austin City Council with a form letter opposing the proposed new Heritage Tree Ordinance.
You can write your own letter of SUPPORT FOR NEW PROTECTIONS FOR HERITAGE TREES, or you can cut and paste all or part of the letter below.
And you can email all the council members using this link: http://tinyurl. com/councilemail
Best Regards, John Paul Moore Tree Preservation Chair, Hyde Park Neighborhood Association Member, City of Austin Tree Task Force City of Austin Urban Forest Steward
Dear Mayor Leffingwell and Austin City Councilpersons,
I support the recommendations of the Austin Urban Forestry Board, the Austin Environmental Board and the Austin Planning Commission for meaningful, effective new protections for Austin's mature, irreplaceable heritage trees.
I recognize, as have these boards and commissions, that changes in Austin's climate already taking place mean that the mature trees we have today can never be replaced, only preserved by an effective ordinance.
I believe that our city can no longer afford to let these trees be
felled with no notice and no real citizen participation in the city's approval of their demolition.
I support the coalition of representatives of the Save Our Springs Alliance, the Austin Neighborhoods Council, Hyde Park Neighborhood Association, Austin Sierra Club and the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance who have worked to create an ordinance with REAL protection for our trees and REAL citizen participation.
As the Lorax said, "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."
Sincerely,
