I'd personally like to thank all those neighbors on both lists who
have taken time to thoughtfully and kindly express opinions and post
information to help everyone come to their own conclusions on this
project. Many people have posted respectful, yet differing opinions
that have been helpful and reasonable. This has been a difficult
issue to find a place on and I've appreciated a lot of the input.
For the record (for what it's worth), I've come to the conclusion,
after much consideration, that I'm in favor of granting a variance as
long as there is ground floor retail on the Koenig face, though I'm
not a voting member of Northfield.
I think it would be a horrible shame for this side of the
neighborhood to have any development that didn't have walkable retail
as a mixed-use component of the development, and I'm not staunchly
against a multifamily development on the site. I'd be really sad to
have the site developed without some retail, because this part of
Koenig really has nothing now that Howard's is gone. And in Skyview,
we're over a mile walk to anything around us to do anything but pay
our gas bill. This is the only plot of land that could offer anything
like that at this point. I'd rather have more retail than they are
planning, but it's better than nothing, imho.
