From the Statesman:
Austin's municipal court moving north
Council OKs $6.9 million purchase of Home Depot location at I-35 and St.
Johns.

The Austin City Council on Thursday approved the $6.9 million purchase
of a soon-to-be-closed Home Depot store at Interstate 35 and St. Johns
Avenue to house the new municipal court and police substation.
Voters authorized a total of $23 million for both facilities as part of
the 2006 bond package. City officials say the new facilities are needed
to deal with the departments' expanding workload.
The move will mean that the court, now housed with the police station on
Seventh Street, will no longer be centrally located.
"We just couldn't afford to be right in the middle of downtown," said
Lauraine Rizer, the city's real estate manager.
Raw land in downtown is going for $100 to $200 per square foot, Rizer
said. The city will pay $65 per square foot for the land and the
building on I-35.
This building also offered ample parking, good visibility and
accessibility by public transportation.
The city looked at 75 properties to find the one that worked best for
both the municipal court and the police substation.
Converting the building is expected to take up to two years after the
Home Depot closes in October 2008.
No definite decision has been made about how the city will use the
current court space after the move. It could become a satellite office
of the municipal court, be used for community court or allow for the
police department to expand.
