I have seen this posted to the hyde park
list today.
I thought this might be of interest to our
neighborhood as well, since HEB Hancock is one of the closest groceries to us.
Thanks,
Laura

Subject: [HydePark] CRIME:
Mugging at Hancock H-E-B on Tuesday
A co-worker just sent the following e-mail to
everyone, urging us to
be careful. I don't want to scare anyone or bum you out, but I thought
this was important to post since the incident happened so close to our
neighborhood.
Hi Everyone-
I was mugged last evening at HEB at Hancock
Center (41st and Red
River). I am shaken but fine.
It was still light—around 7:10, and the store and parking lot were
crowded as usual.
I am sending this to all of you as an alert – a warning to please be
careful even while running run-of-the-mill errands in seemingly safe
areas.
I was parked at the far end of the grocery lot in a row that runs
along 41st Street.
I had just rested my grocery cart against the back
of my car and popped the trunk. I heard a screech, a roar, something
that was odd. I think I may have heard a shout, or HEY or something.
Something made me turn around (my back had been to the commotion).
All of a sudden I see this rough-looking guy bolt out of the passenger
side of an idling pickup truck. He charged at me full speed, staring
me square in the eye, and shoved me hard. He grabbed my arm and
wrenched my purse off of my shoulder, leapt back in the passenger side
and his getaway driver roared off, eastward on 41st. It took me a
second to register what had happened and then I just started screaming
like hell.
A good Samaritan immediately came to my aid and called 911. The police
came and filed a report. They could not have been nicer or more
professional. The HEB security tape shows what happened; it will be
turned over to detectives.
The thieves got my purse and my wallet. Thank God my car/house keys
were in my jeans pocket. My cell phone, ATM/debit card and cash I had
just withdrawn at the Omni were in my tote bag locked in the trunk.
These two criminals knew exactly what they were doing. It happened in
the blink of an eye. Even the cop who looked at the security tape said
that even in frame-by-frame replay it takes place extraordinarily fast.
Please be hyper-vigilant. I was lucky it was just my purse. I shudder
to think about it being worse, or happening to an innocent customer
holding a baby or small child.
Thanks.
