This was forwarded by a friend in the West Austin neighborhood. It's
from a fellow in the Long Canyon Neighborhood. I think it's important
to everyone.
=======================
Hello Neighbors,
Next week the Planning Commission and the City Council will make a
decision that could change the landscape of Austin forever. They will
decide whether to allow billboards currently located in central Austin
to be relocated to Scenic Roadways, which include RM 2222, Loop 360 and
RM 620. These will be the biggest and brightest billboards you will see
anywhere in Central Texas. The billboard faces can be 14 feet high and
48 feet wide (672 square feet).
New amendments to an already seriously flawed billboard relocation
ordinance have been requested by two billboard companies, Reagan
National Advertising and Lamar Advertising, to allow them to place these
very large billboards on our scenic roadways. Please help us convince
the Planning Commission and City Council to deny these amendments. [For
more details, please visit the 2222 CONA website at www.2222CONA.org.
Click on "Details" in the "Call To Action" window.]
Please take the following 3 actions:
1) Send emails to all Planning Commission members and City Council
members urging them to deny the amendments. An example that you can
personalize is shown below, or an email can be sent from the 2222 CONA
website. Emails really do make a difference and we need hundreds and
thousands of emails to derail this giveaway to two companies to the
detriment of the public.
2) Send this message to everyone you know and ask for their support.
3) Attend the Public Hearings - Tuesday, April 8 Planning Commission
meeting at the Austin City Hall Council Chambers, 301 W. 2nd Street at
6:00pm and Thursday, April 10 Austin City Council meeting at Austin City
Hall Council Chambers, 301 W. 2nd Street at 6:00pm. We will have a
slate of prepared speakers to address the issues, but we need your
attendance to pack the hall and demonstrate to the Planning Commission
and City Council that we, the public, are opposed to these egregious
amendments. Be sure to sign up in opposition to this agenda item in the
lobby. We will have people in attendance to help you with the sign-in
process. If you can attend only one of the meetings, please attend the
City Council meeting on Thursday, April 10.
PLEASE HELP US STOP BILLBOARD BLIGHT FROM SPREADING ACROSS AUSTIN.
To send an email to City Council, go to
http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/council/groupmail.htm. Cut and paste the
subject and text of the sample email below into the email form provided.
Edit to include your name and address and to personalize the message.
Send the message. You will receive a copy of the email you sent.
To send an email to the Planning Commission, cut and paste the subject
and text into your own email form, insert your name and address, and
edit if desired. Copy all of the Planning Commissioner email addresses
below into your email address block and send.
Here is the sample email:
Subject: Please Vote NO on the Billboard Amendments
Please vote NO on the amendments proposed for the billboard regulations
in the Land Development Code (Chapter 25-10). These amendments are an
egregious giveaway to two companies to the detriment of the public.
Allowing billboards on Austin's Scenic Roadways is a terrible idea.
Allowing relocated billboards to more than double in size is a violation
of the public trust. Allowing proliferation of billboards through
relocation is a terrible policy. Vote NO on the proposed amendments and
save our beautiful city for everyone to enjoy without the blight of
billboards.
Please do not schedule this hearing before 6:00pm - we want to come and
participate in the public discussion.
Thank you,
