Dear Neighbors,
Thank you to everyone for your kind words. To address some of your questions, I will give some more details.
I am almost always home at that time, and generally have an erratic schedule. I wonder if the thief saw me leave, or just went by the lack of cars in the driveway.
First I called 911; they told me to call 311. 311 told me to call some other number. Someone there told me there was "no one available" in the police department at that time, so he would take a report. When I asked if an officer would be coming, he just said that someone would be coming "that evening" to dust for prints, and that someone from the police department would call me later. No one ever called. The forensics unit did arrive 2 hours later. He looked around, dusted for prints, and basically said the only thing to do would be to look in pawn shops, but that there are so many in Austin that it would be almost impossible. He said a detective would call me in two weeks.
The only good news is that he feels he can "link" our burglary to the one that occurred on Ave F the same day, because the m.o. was exactly the same. He said someone got a license plate number there.
He also said it was good that I reported it, and that evidently lots of people don't report burglaries, but that that is the only way to get increased patrols. I have noticed a lot of patrols in Hyde Park, but none at all on my street. He also encouraged the neighborhood to report "suspicious" persons. It reminded me that I had seen a tall white male about a week ago, walking very fast down the street and looking closely at each house. I wish now that I had reported it. I hate to think of innocent people being harassed, but at least one of these people is NOT innocent.
Sorry to be so long-winded, but knowledge is power. Let's catch these people!
Thanks again,
Susan

Subject: [NNADL] Halloween Burglary
Hi Neighbors,
I'm sorry to report yet another burglary. It happened today (Wed) on Leralynn St (Northfield Neighborhood) between 1:30 and 3:30pm. The front door was broken in, a couple rooms were rifled through, and a laptop and jewelry were taken. I can't say I am surprised that it happened, but I am crushed about the loss of my family heirloom jewelry.
I heard there were two burglaries very similar to ours, that occurred today on Ave F and on E. 49th.
Thanks for listening...
Susan
