Watch seeks a new Program Coordinator to work with students from North and
Northeast Austin, Texas .

 

Austin Youth River Watch (AYRW) www.ayrw.org was founded in 1991 as a combined effort at dropout prevention and
environmental stewardship
for
Austin , Texas.  We strive to have every AYRW
student graduate while learning and teaching about water quality.  AYRW
Mission :
Promote community-based environmental monitoring, awareness, and education
while inspiring and advancing personal and scholastic achievement.  We do
this because working with our young people and helping our environment gives us
hope for the future of our community.

 

Operational:

    Pick
    up students from school and transport to monitoring sites, AYRWP Ecohouse,
    and then home each program day and during enrichment activities. Transport
    to and help supervise students at special events for the monitoring teams
    such as diel studies, camp outs, field trips, etc. Help
    implement the Austin Youth River Watch Summer Leadership Program including
    daily monitoring and educational field trips Help
    plan and lead career exploration activities and help students to set and
    to evaluate personal, academic and River Watch goals Attain
    and maintain status as LCRA CRWN Certified Monitor – training
    provided Help
    recruit AYRWP participants. Assist
    in the recruitment of and communications with coordinating teachers/
    sponsors Assure
    safety and supervision of up to 11 youth
    at a time Develop
    good relationships through positive communications with other staff,
    teachers, parents, board members and other stakeholders Interact
    with school staff Attend
    community meetings, as needed Help
    design and distribute outreach materials as appropriate and assist with or
    lead outreach efforts Help
    assure maintenance of AYRW Ecohouse Help
    take attendance, collect permission forms, field trip
    slips, submit timesheet /payroll related documentation, data sheets, and
    other receipts or records and submit to Program Director as required
    Help
    maintain program equipment, supplies and storage facilities. Let Program
    Director know before you will need new reagents, snack foods, camping
    supplies, office supplies and other necessary materials Help
    ensure vehicles are maintained by and according to the recommendations of
    ASE Certified technicians Help
    collect mail and fax communications and redistribute as necessary for the
    function of the organization Help
    students to enter data online via the LCRA’s CRWN Online Data Entry
    portal Help
    compile, publish and distribute student newsletter, the “Flying Fish
    Review” Will
    perform duties as specified in the Accounting S.O.P. including the opening
    and logging mail procedure Perform
    other duties as assigned by Board, Program Director and Executive Director
 

Program
Management & Training:

    Conduct

    evaluate UT EnviorMentors, interns, and volunteers In

    and Board to coordinate school year and summer program design, discuss
    evaluation processes and outreach efforts, and address other issues
    Help
    prepare, plan and organize special events for the monitoring teams such as
    diel study, camp outs, field trips, etc. Assist
    in the data collection for program evaluation Help
    create documentation of academic, recreational and enrichment activities Participate
    in meetings, workshops, and activities organized by LCRA and other water
    monitoring events
 

Administrative/Supervision:

    Help
    orient, train, observe, coach and mentor students, interns and volunteers Help
    act as a liaison between AYRW and schools by cultivating positive
    relationships through communications with school teachers/sponsors and by
    helping to respond courteously to any concerns or complaints Help
    maintain student records and interact with parents and other staff
    regarding opportunities for students, disciplinary problems with students,
    etc.
 

Special
Projects & Other:

    Participate
    in Earth Day, World Water Monitoring Day, LCRA and other Colorado River
    Watch oriented events, activities, and meetings Help
    maintain AYRW storage area and offices during non-peak hours of school
    year and summer operation Conduct
    other duties as assigned by the Program Director, Executive Director and
    the Board of Directors

Skills/Experience
Required

    Bachelors
    degree required.  Degree in ecology, environmental education, science
    education, geography, environmental science, biology, chemistry preferred
    or related field.  Demonstrated
    competency and experience in outdoor environmental science  /
    ecological monitoring required. Three
    years working with secondary school students. Familiarity
    with CRWN / or Texas Stream Team QAQC preferred.  Bilingual
    in English / Spanish preferred.  Multi-lingual appreciated.  Passion
    for helping young people envision and work toward personal and scholastic
    achievement – essential. Organized
    with strong verbal and written communication skills; strong listening
    capabilities Software
    / Computer skills: Word, Excel, Publisher, Power Point, web editing Courteous
    and professional conduct Self-starter
    and problem-solver with strong initiative and ability to design implement
    and evaluate projects and demonstrated ability to create positive learning
    environment. Health
    Clearance Fingerprinting
    and Child Abuse Index Clearance from Department of Justice Criminal
    Background Check CPR/1st
    Aid certified (Adult, Child and Infant) – can be attained once
    employed Basic
    water rescue certified or equivalent – can be attained once employed

The AYRW office is located in
Austin, Texas at the Austin Water
Utility Hornsby Bend facility in partnership with the
AWU Center

Working
Conditions

This
job requires a lot of driving.  Work is performed primarily in an external
environment and with exposure to inclement weather, and varying temperatures.
May be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Subject to standing, walking, sitting,
bending, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Must be able to
lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) such as boxes. May drive, hike, stand, or
walk for long periods of time.  Employees working in the field with AYRW
students are advised to dress in pants, long-sleeved shirts, closed toed shoes
and a broad brimmed hat.  It is further advised, in the summer, to wear a
swimsuit under regular clothing as a step toward being prepared for any safety
situations that may arise. Employees may work 120 – 130 hours during the
week of Spring Break.
