Fw: AIA DESIGN VOICE Event Invitation - 29 January
'09
Greetings,
Friends of ours met an architect, Eva Schone, who talked about
her project. "The event described below is the launch of a
project she's started. The first paragraph is a blurb from a
short article on KUT news a couple of days ago plus a link to the
audio, the second is a description she sent me in an e-mail, and below
that is the official flyer for the event. Please forward to your
lists, nhood organizations, and anyone else you think would be
interested." A new volunteer project, called “Design Voice,” shows that
the creative workforce can make a difference in urban development in
Austin. When we talk about pro-bono work, we tend to think of
attorneys helping clients who cannot afford legal aid. But the world
of pro-bono design is sizable and growing, and Design Voice wants to
tap into that. The group is a partnership between architects, artists,
designers, and community organizations who will volunteer their time
to improve the quality of life in the city. http://kut.org/items/show/15466 >

DESIGN VOICE is an
initiative I started with the great support of the firm I work with
(Hurt Partners Architects). Since the idea was to take a
multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to the entire quest we
solicited the support of our professional organization, the American
Institute for Architects, and hooked up with Real Community Austin
(Ann Graham and Greg Esparza) and with HousingWorks Austin who have
helped us greatly spread the word about our efforts throughout the
creative community and non-profit world. DESIGN VOICE operates under
the umbrella of the AIA, but aims to be very inculsionary and open to
the community at large, the art world, and we'll try to assist and
learn from the many great non-profits who are involved in housing
and community building. Real Community is a group that aims to
facilitate events for various organizations throughout the
community in a new event series, called chainLink. Our
DESIGN VOICE event is the first chainLink event.
I think that explains it in
a nut shell and we'll explain it in more depth at the
event.
