Call me crazy, but I posit with extreme confidence that the hundreds of
extremely hungover hipster louts who patronize the Tamale House for
their 89 cent breakfast taco fix, who peel out of the parking lot
without paying any attention and are hitting speeds exceeding 50-60mph
by the time they reach the school present a considerably greater
physical danger to the kids at Ridgetop than some sad old hobo dozing
off in the parking lot. Psychological harm is another matter. <:)
Again, I wouldn't even bother to mention this if the Tamale House didn't
actively discourage bicyclists, if not through verbal abuse in every
instance than at least by refusing to provide a bike rack or any kind of
place for bicyclists to park. A business that caters to drunk drivers
after the fact is no more desirable (in my opinion) than one responsible
for creating the situation in the first place.
And yes, there's no compelling reason to support alcohol sales within
300ft of a school, particularly since this would encourage the Tamale
House patrons to enjoy a little hair of the dog before they peel out of
the parking lot pedal to the metal, making an already bad situation
worse. Given the great business El Dorado has going (as per the best of
Austin Chronicle review), I can't fathom why they would want to bother
with this in the first place, and seriously doubt it will hurt them if
their permit gets shot down.
