 Baker Three

The area of Central West known as District 3 continues to see residential burglaries as its number one problem. The items which are commonly stolen are large flat screen televisions, desktop and laptop computers, and gaming consoles with games, mobile phones and IPods. Electronics seem to be the most popular items. Most burglars are entering by kicking in the front or back door. The homes are being watched and are being burglarized once the resident has left the home. While there have been arrests made in some residential burglaries in nearby sectors, which seem to have ties to our area, the burglaries continue. This has to be due to multiple suspects who more than likely are not even related to one another and not working together. Solid suspect information linking individuals to residential burglaries in District
3 has been almost non-existent, making it very difficult for the police to track down and locate these criminals. So, with this being said I ask for you the citizens to please take the necessary precautions to safeguard yourselves and your property. If you see any suspicious activity I ask that you call 911, at the time the activity is occurring, and have officers respond to investigate. Keep a watchful eye out in your neighborhoods and look out for one another. Get to know your neighbors and communicate with each other. Only together can we succeed.

Hello and Welcome to 2010, with your help the DRs will continue to address the quality of life and crime issues that occur in your area. The Renaissance Market has been revitalized in such a way that we now have much more law enforcement capabilities.
Burglary of Vehicles is a concern for us and we will continue our efforts, education and prevention. Remember to always Lock, Take and Hide when you park your vehicle.
We will also be addressing the quality of life i.e. “Broken Window” issues with an Area Clean up in the spring 2010 to include Graffiti and trash clean up, for this we will be looking for volunteers to help bring our neighborhoods back to life.
In addition to working with neighborhoods we are looking at starting a Business Alliance to address business concerns in dealing with crime and safety issues with a business specific focus. If anyone is interested in helping in this respect please call us or e-mail us at any time.
We have also taken on a much needed task, with the aide of UTPD, of putting together a three day Sexual Assault and Dating Violence prevention conference for August 2010.
We have big plans for this year and together we know we all can make a difference toward making our city safe.
As always if you have any concerns, suggestions or questions or just want to volunteer please contact us at.

Baker Four

The main concerns and or problems affecting Baker 4 are speeding and burglary of vehicle.  I have received an increase in phone calls and emails from concerned citizens in reference to speeding in the residential areas and school zones.  I have addressed these issues with aggressive traffic enforcement in the school zones and will seek help from patrol in the residential areas.  The burglary of vehicle problem seems to shift from district to district but at times the Mt. Bonnell area gets hit hard.  I have been patrolling and putting out mousetraps daily in this area and have seen a decrease during the morning and early afternoon hours.  I have planned to shift my work hours around to further educate and help the citizens in these areas of concern.

Hello folks!
Well, it’s the beginning of 2010 and so far we are off to an average beginning in terms of crime in our neighborhoods. To make things easier for folks that live in my area, I will be referencing your zip code for crime statistics. Let’s begin with January 1-14th, 2010: So far in the 78751 area, we have 2 Burglary of Residences and 21 Burglary of Vehicles (7 were from 24 HR fitness parking lot at Hancock) and in area 78756 we have 1 Burglary of Residence and 8 Burglary of Vehicles. Let’s compare these numbers to December 2009: in 78751 we had 12 Burglary of Residences and 30 Burglary of Vehicles, in 78756 we had 4 Burglary of Residences and 11 Burglary of Vehicles. What this means to me is that crime is happening all over, some have less crime than others but no one is immune to it. Knowing this, by taking a few extra minutes
everyday to “prepare” for criminals lurking, you will decrease your chances of being the next victim. I read all of my burglary reports that occur in my area and it’s all too common what is taken: GPS, radars, purses, cash, sunglasses, laptops, IPod’s, cell phones…yes, things that can be hidden and put away in less than 2 minutes. The same concept applies to your home. It takes about 2 minutes to walk through your house, lock the doors, shut and lock the windows, close the drapes and make sure that a light is left on inside. It also takes a few minutes to slow life down and look around at your surroundings to notice if there is anything out of the ordinary while your leave your home and come back to it. I propose that for one of our New Years’ resolutions we take the time to hinder the criminals who will be looking into our homes and vehicles with a few extra minutes of our day to make their job harder and not easier. I hope 2010
brings many smiles and fewer victims…Cheers!

Get Involved
Many of you frequently ask about how to get involved in creating or changing city ordinances and how to help us, help you. One of the avenues that I recommend is to be a part of the City Council meetings. The meetings are held on most Thursdays starting at 10am at 301 W 2nd St. The best way to voice your opinions is in front of the people who can directly have impact on what you want. I would encourage anyone who is passionate about certain issues to take the time to go the website: www.ci.austin.tx.us\council and look at the meeting dates with their agendas. If one of the upcoming meetings does not have your issue listed, then you can still speak about any
topic during the general citizen communication at noon. You still must register starting 14 days prior to the meeting date at 9am and ends on Thursday at 4:30pm. You can register over the phone: 512-974-2210, by e-mail: [at] or in person at suite 1120 , City Hall. A maximum of 10 individuals per meeting can speak, so get your spot early! If your topic is already on the agenda for a meeting, you can register electronically beginning on Monday afternoon, the week of the meeting. You may speak up to 15 minutes on the agenda issue. The following people are our elected Council members:
Mayor Lee Leffingwell
City Council members: Chris Riley, Mike Martinez, Randi Shade, Laura Morrison, Bill Spelman and Sheryl Cole

Panhandlers
The homeless population is an ongoing issue and debate in the City of Austin .  There are several agencies (Arch (512) 974-2000, Caritas (512) 479-4610, and Salvation Army (512) 447-2272 that provide services and assistance to those who are in need.  Anyone that drives around Austin will see transients at intersections panhandling for money.  Austin has a very generous and kind population who wants to help those in need and therefore give the panhandlers money.  Austenites are highly encouraged to continue their generosity but instead of hand to hand donations, direct them to the agencies that assist the homeless.  These agencies provide food, shelter, medical assistance and resources for those in need to find work, helping them get back on their feet and giving
them the ability to provide for themselves.  The money given to the panhandlers may or may not be spent on bettering their life.  More often then not the money is spent on drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes which does not provide the panhandler any help in bettering their situation. If you give the money to the panhandlers you are encouraging them to stay on the corners.
