The Winter Olympics are basically a TV show — and a successful one. Lindsey Vonn and other U.S. medal winners even helped NBC's telecast win a ratings battle with American Idol.

But the whole spectacle could shift to ESPN by the time we get to Sochi in 2014.

Years ago, a Pakistani boy fell in love with skiing. In the foothills of Asia's great mountains, he tied wooden boards to his feet and slid downhill.

A survival trainer noticed Muhammad Abbas and other boys. He found skis for the kids. Now that man is coaching Abbas, who at 24 is Pakistan's first competitor in a Winter Olympics.

The Americans have come to the Winter Games with new-found international respect. The U.S. Olympic Committee gave the team $1 million which has helped bring in world class coaches and technicians.
