If you've been watching TV lately, you may have come across Wal-Mart's new back-to-school ad. It features a well-scrubbed teenager wearing the California surf brand Op, as her Everymom exults that the giant retailer satisfied her daughter's fashion cravings without breaking the family bank.

On the surface the spot doesn't look radically different from the company's advertising in years past. But its creation, part of Wal-Mart's "Save money.

Live better" campaign, is a result of dramatic changes taking place behind the scenes.

Wal-Mart announced plans to invest more than a billion dollars to open up to 90 new stores in Brazil. That country has become Latin America's fastest growing market, in part because of rising incomes and cheaper consumer credit.

Wal-Mart has been in Brazil for more than a decade, and already has 318 stores there.

Wal-Mart, Chinese Unions Reach Deal On Pay Raises

Wal-Mart has struck agreements with unions in China that represent nearly 50,000 people who work for the U.S. retailer there.

The deal with unions in various Chinese cities includes a pay raise of 8 percent over the next two years, to keep up with inflation.
