Fate of voter ID remains uncertain

The Texas attorney general announced Monday that the state of Texas filed suit in federal court for approval of its controversial voter ID law passed last spring.

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 requires Texas to receive preclearance from the Department of Justice before implementing any laws that could affect voter participation.

The law, which would require voters to present a government-issued photo ID at the polls, was supposed to take effect Jan. 1 but has been under review since July.

Austin added 18,000 new residents from July 2006 to July 2007, making it the eighth fastest growing city in the nation during that period, new data from the U.S.

Census Bureau shows.

Austin's population in July 2007 was 743,074, up 2.4 percent from the prior year.

Austin was the fourth fastest growing city in Texas during that same period, falling behind Houston, San Antonio and Fort Worth.

With an influx of 39,000 new residents, Houston was the fastest growing city in the country.
