If you take the new light rail from downtown, the first stop is at Plaza Saltillo on 5th and Comal just 8 blocks East of I-35.
With a thriving bar and restaurant scene evolving on east 6th street and great new public transportation options, it's no wonder that developers are headed to the area.

Capital Metro has been partnering with Trammell Crow to help make this transit-oriented development a great success and we would love to see you at the party!
This will be a fun event hosted by Rare Magazine featuring live music, a scavenger hunt, and lots of giveaways, including the chance to win six months of free rent.
Capital Metro will also have a table inside one of the live/work spaces to share information about our future MetroRail service and extensive bus services that converge at this location.
Please join us!

Although I've been paying a lot of attention to the Red Bird Lane case lately, there is nothing unusual about it.
Austin homeowners are always up in arms over proposed zoning changes. And who can blame them? Our land-use regulations have conditioned homeowners to expect "protection" from every piddling change in use.

So a bit more detail has surfaced, and it turns out that Capital Metro, according to the short description in the latest stimulus proposal from our local governments, is now asking for federal dollars to, hold on your hats:
triple-track the Red Line.
The theory, I guess, is to keep freight service in the middle, and run the DMU trains on the outside tracks.
Here's what I'm writing to City Council, as we speak:
Crestview Neighborhood Association Mon, 09/24/2007 - 7:04pm
At the last Crestview neighborhood association meeting, we heard from Sonya Lopez, pricipal planner for the Transit Oriented Development (TOD).
She presented TOD information specific to the Crestview neighborhood and listened to and documented concerns from Crestview residents about TOD.

We had a great turn out at this meeting of about 80+ people. Thanks for the wonderful participation. This past meeting was all about all the development happening at the old Huntsman site.
Mike Blizzard was there representing the developer of the property (Trammell Crow and Stratus). Sonya Lopez, a city employee, was there representing the City of Austin TOD (Transit Oriented Development) and the Parsons Brinkerhoff consultants.
