China Taps Citizen Volunteers to Dole Quake Aid

Since the devastating earthquake in southwestern China, hundreds of Chinese have volunteered to oversee the distribution of disaster relief funds and supplies.

The aim is to prevent corrupt local officials from embezzling the funds. Although it is not clear how much power the volunteers have, observers say the experiment could increase public participation in anti-corruption efforts.

Two weeks after a huge earthquake rocked southwestern China, claiming more than 65,000 lives, another powerful aftershock hit the region Sunday, toppling tens of thousands of homes.

Millions of people in southwestern China are homeless, so the government has set up tent cities. In Beichuan county, school was in session in one tent.

Shoddy Work, Leadership Blamed in School Collapse

The earthquake earlier this week in Southwestern China caused the collapse of a middle school that trapped hundreds of students.

The school was expanded from two stories to four, which may have contributed to its collapse. Residents of the town think some of the blame goes to local officials, who they say are corrupt.
