Transparency, transparency, wherefore art thou?

Congressional leaders are planning to hold “secret” meetings instead of the traditional public conference committee hearings to reconcile the Senate and House versions of the health care insurance reform bills.

While the GOP has reacted with expected outrage, the proposed “new system” of “private meetings” is generating some concern from the traditional media, as ABC News reports:

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are returning to work on efforts to craft a bill to overhaul the nation's health care system.

House and Senate leaders have pledged to get health bills passed by both chambers before members leave for their annual summer break next month.

However, sometimes Congress acts at its own pace.

The official debate on overhauling health care began Wednesday on Capitol Hill. Two Senate committees wrestled with difficult questions of how to design and pay for the health care changes.

The committees looked to three former Senate leaders for suggestions on a possible compromise.
