The start of a new school year in Maryland brings a new requirement: All schools in the state must develop plans to promote environmental literacy.

The new requirement is creating some challenges for teachers. The goal is to integrate environmental concerns into science, social studies and other topics.

Austin parents of students who will be in kindergarten and first grade next fall (the 2010-2011 school year) — and their children — are invited to attend a Dual Language orientation session at one of the four AISD schools that will offer the new program.

The sessions will include tours of the campuses.

Students in Iraq will open new textbooks this school year that reflect the enormous changes the country has been through and include historical events that were once forbidden topics.

Many of the fawning references to the former dictator have also been excised.
