Mayor Uses Pen Name To Report City's Good News

Mike Winder, the mayor of a Salt Lake City suburb, thought there was too much crime in the paper. So he started a second career as a freelance writer, under the pen name Richard Burwash.

Before a policy against pen names forced him to confess, he provided more than a dozen articles, and even quoted himself.

Children's Furniture Store Struggles To Survive

Sales at That's My Room in Salt Lake City have slowed to less than $5,000 a month. Despite making cutbacks, the owners say, they haven't taken a paycheck since the store opened a year and a half ago — right when the recession hit.

Man Pays For Stop Sign Stolen 35 Years Ago

A young man stole a stop sign in Salt Lake City 35 years ago. An official with Utah's Department of Transportation said they had received a check for $600, along with a letter apologizing for the deed.

The writer added that he'd prayed no one was injured. He may find comfort in knowing his money will just about cover the cost of three new stop signs.
