U.N. Peacekeepers Unaware Of Mass Rapes In Congo

The U.N. Security Council is grappling with a troubling question in the Democratic Republic of Congo: How could U.N. peacekeepers not know about mass rapes taking place over a four-day period this summer?

Nearly 200 women were raped by rebel fighters. The U.N. says it only found out about the atrocities more than a week after they ended.

Up to 20 African countries mark 50 years of independence from Europe this year. That includes the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Since 1960, Congo, which is potentially one of the wealthiest countries on the continent, has lurched from rebellions and military coups to dictatorship and back-to-back civil wars.

The northern white rhinoceros was hunted to extinction by poachers in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Four of the last eight known northern whites in the world, two male and two female, were sent from a Czech zoo to Kenya, where scientists hope they will breed.
