Microsoft on Thursday handily topped its revenue targets and slid by Wall Street estimates with solid fiscal first quarter results, but cut its outlook for the December quarter.

For its first quarter ending Sept. 30 (statement and presentation), Microsoft reported net income of $4.37 billion, or 48 cents a share, on revenue of $15.06 billion.



 

Analyst: Intel will weather the storm

Intel got an upgrade on Tuesday on the theory that its third and fourth quarter results will be decent amid a weak global economy.

Piper Jaffray analyst Auguste Richard upgraded Intel to buy from neutral based on the theory that the chip giant can top low expectations.



 

RIM’s second quarter falls short; Forecast light

Research in Motion’s second quarter results fell short of estimates and the third quarter outlook was weaker than expected too.

RIM said Thursday (statement) that it reported net income of $495.5 million, or 86 cents a share, compared to $287.7 million, 50 cents a share, a year ago.

Cable: Natural born monopoly?

The second quarter results are out and it appears that the cable industry is winning share in broadband, phone and TV connections and handily thwarting encroachment by the likes of Verizon and AT&T.

In fact, TV and broadband service is meant to be a monopoly and cable appears to be the winner.
