JPMorgan Chase: $4.8 Billion 4th-Quarter Profit

JPMorgan Chase says profits for the recent quarter were almost 50 percent higher than last year. The bank reported fourth-quarter profits at $4.8 billion Friday, saying its losses from bad loans declined, which boosted earnings.

Wal-Mart's 3rd Quarter Profits Rise

The world's largest retailer announced Tuesday it made nearly $3.5 billion in profit last quarter. That's up slightly from the same period last year.

Sales at Wal-Mart's U.S. stores, however, were slightly lower -- as they have been for the 18 months or so because of the poor economy.

Wal-Mart's U.S Sales Appear Soft

The world's largest retailer said its fourth-quarter profits rose 22 percent. Sales for U.S. stores, however, fell nearly 2 percent.

Some analysts say that's partly because of the company's aggressive cost-cutting on food and electronics during the holidays.
