Dell’s third quarter was a mixed bag. Revenue was down amid weak demand, but earnings were better than expected.

The outlook was “challenging” as expected. The company reported third quarter earnings of $727 million, or 37 cents a share, on revenue of $15.16 billion.

The good news: Earnings handily topped estimates of 31 cents a share.



 

Cisco first quarter on target; Economy ‘very challenging’

Cisco Systems reported fiscal first quarter earnings of $2.2 billion, or 37 cents a share, on revenue of $10.3 billion.

Excluding charges and other items, Cisco reported earnings of $2.5 billion, or 42 cents a share. Both sets of Cisco earnings (statement) included a tax gain of 3 cents a share.



 

Symantec cuts outlook amid ‘pause’ in IT spending

AT&T’s iPhone 3G pact with Apple doesn’t come cheap. It cost AT&T its quarterly targets and took a chunk of cash flow even though company officials declare the iPhone-induced earnings hit “success-based costs.” The company on Wednesday reported adjusted third quarter earnings of 67 cents a share, four cents below Wall Street estimates.



 

Same story for Amazon: Q3 beats, Q4 forecast disappoints

Same story - different company, different day. This time it’s Amazon on the hot seat. The company reported third quarter earnings of $118 million, or 27 cents per share, on $4.26 billion in revenue.

(statement) Profits were up 48 percent from the same quarter a year ago and revenue rose 31 percent.



 

Yahoo meets estimates, plans to lay off 10 percent of workforce

Yahoo’s third quarter earnings weren’t the complete train wreck that was expected as the company met Wall Street estimates and announced a long-awaited layoff.

The company plans to lay off 10 percent of its workforce in the fourth quarter.
