The Student Government Assembly passed a resolution Tuesday to include a referendum on the ballot in this spring’s election.

The referendum will include two questions: first, “Do you support the proposed tuition increase?” and second, “Would you accept budget cuts to a wide-range of University services and programs?”



 

Powers recommending rise in tuition

President William Powers, Jr. asked the UT System Board of Regents on Thursday for the largest tuition increase the UT System will allow during the next two academic years.

Students could pay hundreds more in tuition for the 2012 - 2014 semesters if the recommendations are approved.

The regents will meet in March to finalize tuition for 2012 -2013 and 2013 - 2014.

Students concerned over possible tuition increase

Students have voiced concerns about possible tuition increases which are intended to improve four-year graduation rates and worry that those goals favor timely graduation rates over quality education.

About 50 people attended a Tuition Policy Advisory Committee forum about tuition recommendations for 2012-2014 on Wednesday.

TPAC is considering recommending the largest tuition increases that the UT System will allow in order to cover budget shortfalls.
