In Pakistan, lawmakers will select the country's next president Saturday. Asif Ali Zardari is the frontrunner to succeed President Pervez Musharraf, who resigned under pressure last month.

Zardari took over the Pakistan Peoples Party after his wife and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in December.

The departure of Pakistan's president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, will aid the fight against terrorism, according to Husain Haqqani, Pakistan's ambassador to the United States.

"Unfortunately, there was no chemistry between Gen. Musharraf and President Karzai," Haqqani said. But NATO troops will still be kept out of Pakistan, he said.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announced Monday that he is resigning rather than face impeachment. Musharraf dominated Pakistan for years after seizing power in a 1999 military coup.

Pakistani journalist Fasi Zaka says Musharraf's allies had been largely mum on whether they'd support him in fighting impeachment.



 

Facing Impeachment, Pakistan's Musharraf Resigns

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announced Monday that he is resigning. Earlier, members of Pakistan's ruling coalition had finalized impeachment charges to be launched against Musharraf if he refused to step down.
