Energy Tops Agenda As Congress Returns From Recess

Lawmakers return to Washington this week energized by their conventions and turning their attention to energy. House Republicans stayed in town over the break to demand an end to the ban on offshore drilling.

Democrats now appear to be more open to compromise. Renee Montagne talks to NPR Congressional Correspondent Debbie Elliott about what's developing on the energy front.

AP - Democrats' stance against offshore drilling shifted more on Saturday, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi signaling she was willing to consider opening up more areas off the nation's coastlines to oil and gas exploration.

The Bush Administration estimates that expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 bbl. per day by 2030.

We use about 20 million bbl. per day, so that would meet about 1% of our demand two decades from now.

Sen. Barack Obama was in the battleground state of Michigan on Monday and talked about his energy policy. His plan includes the possibility of limited new offshore drilling, and tapping the strategic petroleum reserve — both of which he once opposed.
