The nation's largest school district is getting a new leader. Hearst Magazines Chairwoman Cathie Black will become chancellor of the New York City public schools following weeks of controversy over her qualifications.

Black has a long career in publishing but she's never worked in education.

NY-born man arrested in Hawaii in terror case (AP)

AP - A New York City-born man was ordered to return from Hawaii where he was arrested on charges he tried to join the U.S. military at a Times Square recruiting station so he could he could be deployed to Iraq, desert and fight with anti-American insurgency forces.



 

N.Y. Doormen Threaten To Walk Off The Job

Some 30,000 New York City Doormen and other building workers are threatening to strike. Their contract expires next week, and the union and building owners remain far apart.

There hasn't been a strike since 1991.

Texas: We're Number Four!

A new Harris Interactive Poll ranks Texas as the fourth most popular state that people would choose to live in, trailing behind California, Florida and Hawaii.

Among cities, the 2,498 U.S. adults surveyed put Dallas and Austin in 10th and 11th place, respectively, with New York City, Denver and San Francisco in the top three.

French Tourists Get Scary N.Y. Welcome

Five tourists from France found themselves on a wild ride in New York City. Looking for a cab, the visitors hopped into an unlicensed van.

The airport's police spotted the criminal cab, and immediately gave chase through two boroughs until the van crashed.
