Gustav has come and gone. And fortunately, New Orleans has been spared the type of damage after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita three years ago.

As New Orleans residents begin to return to the city, they'll find uprooted trees and some ongoing power outages, but not the more devastating damage that was feared.

That's thanks, in part, to the rebuilt levees that protected the city. Work to make them stronger continues.

New Orleans Survives Gustav

Well, Hurricane Gustav has left the Louisiana coast with a lot of clean-up and, sadly, eight reported deaths.

But the good news is: New Orleans survived with only some power loss and sewer problems.

Residents should be able to return within the next few days.

We can all now breathe a sigh of relief.
