A blanket of sleet may be the only ice Austinites will see fall from the sky this season. Many experts are expecting conditions to warm up this afternoon and remain for the rest of the week.

DALLAS — The threat of rolling blackouts, constant strain on the Texas electric grid and hunkering down indoors to avoid the relentless summer heat may soon be sweaty memories as the state’s vicious heat wave appears to be letting up.

A cool front crossing the state Sunday was expected to lower temperatures across Texas this week, lessening the demand on the state’s electric grid.

The change comes just as Texans step outside to fire up barbecue grills, splash in pools and shop on Labor Day.



 

Rain helps in battle against East Texas Wildfires

HOUSTON — Crews battling rare East Texas wildfires got some relief Wednesday when rain blanketed the region where blazes have forced hundreds of people to evacuate their homes and blackened tens of thousands of acres.

There's a "pretty good downpour right now," Jason Curry, a spokesman for the federal incident management team coordinating firefighting efforts, told The Associated Press.

A winter storm system is making its way through Central Texas tonight, bringing with it more of the freezing rains that we've seen all day. According to the National Weather Service, we may even see a bit of light snow and possible sleet, especially towards the Hill Country tonight—but "any accumulations would be very short-lived," they're saying.
