In Southern California, they sure love their cars. And in Santa Ana, motorists didn't even have to get out of their vehicles to vote.

On Monday, the city set up drive-thru voting booths. Voters could confirm they're registered, then pull ahead into lanes leading to electronic voting machines, roll down the window and cast their vote.

The only thing missing, fries.

Two lanes are now available both eastbound and westbound continuously from Interstate 35 to MoPac; motorists are urged to drive cautiously in adjusting to the new lane configurations.

For motorists, it doesn't mean "free" but the elimination of human-staffed tollbooths. Instead users will pay only by tag or mail for using the Travis-Williamson County road.

Northbound lanes at 1327 will close Saturday.

TxDOT will be shutting down southbound lanes of I-35 at FM 1327 at 9 p.m. on May 9. The northbound lanes will be closed on Saturday morning.

Motorists in rural areas are keeping a close eye on the price of gasoline. No one likes to see the price at the pump go up, but drivers in remote areas say they are especially pinched.

They say that's because they don't have many options — no carpools, trains or buses.
