All Hopped Up: Town Unites For Toad Revival

An unlikely coalition including ranchers, miners, off-road racers, opponents of big government and the local brothel has succeeded in reviving the Amargosa toad, a warty, speckled, palm-sized creature that just a few years ago seemed headed for extinction.

Ex-Miners Say Massey Skirted Inspection Rules

Miners said Massey Energy often fails to take basic safety precautions until an inspector from the Mine Safety and Health Administration approaches underground.

Last month's explosion at a Massey mine in West Virginia killed 29 people.

Other Massey Mines Showed A Pattern Of Violations

An NPR News Investigation has found that Massey Energy had nine coal mines with high injury rates last year, in addition to the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia where 29 miners died last week.

Four Massey mines had injury rates more than twice the national rate in 2009.
