Romney lacks trust on issues such as outlawing abortion and opposing same-sex marriage and because he is a Mormon.

Opposition is particularly powerful among those who supported former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in the Republican presidential primaries earlier this year.

The Liberty Counsel and 90% of the nation’s leading Conservative Evangelical activists met privately this week to discuss backing McCain.The group concluded that they have many shared values with McCain, in addition to writing a letter recommending Mike Huckabee for VEEP.
