Why Haven't Credit Problems Been Resolved?

The government's Troubled Asset Relief Program — known as TARP — was designed to thaw the frozen credit markets by, among other things, buying up financial firms' "toxic assets." The Treasury Department says it has given $155 billion to eight banks so far, which has helped them increase short-term lending.

But the department hasn't yet started to buy up problematic mortgage-backed securities.

DC Neighborhood Turns Out For Obama

In the nation's capital, a celebration spontaneously began in a historically black neighborhood at 14th and U Streets NW.

Once the election was called for Democrat Barack Obama, hundreds of people poured from bars and restaurants into the neighborhood — despite a heavy drizzle.

Obama Stocks Wins In Predictions Market

If you'd invested money in Barack Obama, you would have made a profit. Stocks in Obama and John McCain — or rather their chances of winning — have been trading on a political futures market called Intrade.

Millions of dollars have poured in to this prediction market. Investors are already placing bids for the U.S. presidential race in 2012.



 

Obama, Japan, Suggests A Presidential Visit

If Barack Obama wins the White House, he already has an invitation for a foreign tour. Residents of Obama, Japan, have been wearing "I Love Obama" T-shirts.

As far as we know, there's no McCain, Japan. But it's a fair guess that the Republican is getting votes from customers of McCain Mall in North Little Rock in Arkansas — a state that McCain is favored to win.



 

Peer Lending Spreads In Tight Credit Market

Philly Hotels To Tampa Bay Rays: No Vacancy

The Tampa Bay Rays woke up Wednesday in a historic hotel where Olympic runner Jesse Owens and eight American presidents have stayed.

The Hotel du Pont in Wilmington, Del., was the only hotel with 85 available rooms after Game 5 — played in Philadelphia, 50 miles from the hotel — was suspended for rain.
