Fellowship to study media's role in sports with grant funding

The Texas Program in Sports and Media granted $25,000 in fellowships to fund research projects on sports and media, the first of their kind for the program.

The program raised $25,000 to grant fellowships to five different research teams from University funds, College of Communication funds and donors, said Texas Program in Sports and Media executive director Michael Cramer in an email.

The research projects will contribute to the developing field of sports and media, said program manager Christopher Hart.



 

Rangers, Astros select paralyzed players in MLB Draft

Johnathan Taylor and Buddy Lamothe may never play baseball again after accidents left them partially paralyzed.
That didn’t matter to the teams that picked them Wednesday during the final rounds of the Major League Baseball draft.
Taylor, an outfielder from the University of Georgia, was a 33rd-round pick of the Texas Rangers, while Lamothe, a reliever from San Jacinto College, was the Houston Astros’ 40th-round selection.

Ricketts Family To Buy Chicago Cubs

Major League Baseball is expected to approve the largest deal in its history. The billionaire Ricketts family, of Nebraska, last week reached an agreement to buy a controlling interest in the Chicago Cubs from the financially-troubled Tribune Company.

For about $800 million, the family would gain control of one of the most storied teams in baseball and Wrigley Field.

However, it's not clear what Cubs fans get out of the deal.



 

1939: First Major League Baseball Game Airs On TV

It's the 70th anniversary of the first Major League Baseball game to be broadcast on television. The double-header between the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field aired on experimental station W2XBS, which is now WNBC-TV.

It's estimated that 3,000 people watched the game on TV.
