Waitress Who Introduced L.A. To Nachos Dies

The waitress who's credited with introducing nachos to Los Angeles has died. Carmen Rocha started working at El Cholo Mexican restaurant in 1959.

And she brought with her from Texas a special treat: tortilla wedges, shredded cheddar cheese and slices of jalapeno pepper.

One cookbook writer told the Los Angeles Times, "If they were called 'Carmens,' not nachos, her name would be remembered forever."



 

California May Need $7 Billion Federal Loan

California is running out of cash. The Los Angeles Times reports that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson informing him that the state might need to borrow $7 billion to keep operating.

Australian Firm Brings Luxury Cinemas To U.S.

An Australian company is bringing its Gold Class luxury cinemas to the U.S. The Los Angeles Times reports that the plan is to make movies even more of an escape.

Tickets cost $35, but customers get smaller crowds, plush seats and tables, and waiters offering lobster spring rolls, creme brulee, chardonnay and pinot noir.



 

U.S. Scientist Tied To 2001 Anthrax Attacks Dies

A U.S. scientist suspected in the 2001 anthrax attacks has died in an apparent suicide. The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that Bruce Ivins took an overdose of pain medication hours before he was to be indicted.

At Tribune, Two Top Newspaper Execs Step Down
