Austin added 18,000 new residents from July 2006 to July 2007, making it the eighth fastest growing city in the nation during that period, new data from the U.S.

Census Bureau shows.

Austin's population in July 2007 was 743,074, up 2.4 percent from the prior year.

Austin was the fourth fastest growing city in Texas during that same period, falling behind Houston, San Antonio and Fort Worth.

With an influx of 39,000 new residents, Houston was the fastest growing city in the country.

Jim Hightower, 58, is a rabblerouser. The Denison-born Texan began his career as a legislative aide in Washington, D.C., before returning to the Lone Star State to serve as editor of the feisty biweekly political publication the Texas Observer.

He then served two terms as Texas' agriculture commissioner, fighting for farmers and serving as a thorn in the side of big agribusiness, before becoming a career populist in the 1990s.
