Austin Goes Classical Documentary (KLRU)

Planning Ahead, Austin  Thu, 09/23/2010 - 9:05pm

Austin Goes Classical was the biggest classical guitar festival ever, and it happened this past June right here in Austin at the Long Center.

Folks came out from 25 countries, Austin's Mayor and the UT System Chancellor were both MCs, there was a youth orchestra with 200 kids premiering a new piece by Austin's Graham Reynolds, the Austin Symphony played, the Biscuit Brothers entertained, Master Pancake heckled with the Alamo's Rolling Roadshow and, of course, the greatest classical players in the world plucked.

Golden Hornet Project's 'Steinway to Hell'

Planning Ahead, Austin  Tue, 07/06/2010 - 4:06pm

They’re at it again. Austin’s busiest indie alt classical musicians Peter Stopschinski and Graham Reynolds are going to battle it over the ivories this Sunday at a piano-playing showdown — at a real piano bar no less.

During ‘Steinway to Hell,’ Reynolds and Stopschinski will swap original compositions, play some classics together and separately and throw in a free wheeling pop cover or two, with a few stories along the way.

And throw it down.

'The Trash Project' celebrates everyday labor as art

Planning Ahead, Austin  Thu, 09/10/2009 - 12:03pm

Choreographer Allison Orr has coaxed firefighters, dog walker, Elvis impersonators and Venetian gondoliers to be dancers.

In the process, Orr has created not just spirited shows, but also poked at our pre-conceived notions of what kind of movement can be considered dance.

Now, the innovative Austin dancemaker transforms the movements and equipment of 25 workers from the city’s Solid Waste Services Department and 16 trash-collecting vehicles into a large-scale dance celebration of the physical labor most of us overlook.
