AP - Auto industry allies hope to secure up to $50 billion in government loans this month that would pay to modernize plants and help struggling car makers build more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Lighter, fuel-efficient vehicles could cause costlier injuries to drivers when compared to heavier vehicles, according to a study released last week.

The Insurance Research Council, a non-profit research organization, published the report, which was based on information provided by insurance companies across the country.

I love this idea…and I would certainly take advantage of it if it becomes law.

The bill is called “The Energy Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Automobile Tax Credit Act of 2008″ and it provides tax credits of up to $2K for people who sell or trade in their car for a model that’s 20% more fuel efficient.
