Longhorns fight back, down Wildcats from the line

Daily Texan  Sat, 02/11/2012 - 6:40pm

The free throw line was the Longhorns' best friend in a game they desperately needed.

Texas made more free throws (35) than field goals (18) and engineered another second half comeback to beat Kansas State, 75-64, on Saturday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center.

UT has won three games in a row.

"It's a great win for us," said Texas coach Rick Barnes.

"We didn't have the intensity we needed in the first half. But in the second half we played terrific."

Daily Texan  Thu, 02/09/2012 - 11:33pm

The Longhorns are starting to peak at the right time. The same holds true for Kansas State, though.

Texas hosts the Wildcats Saturday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center and look to extend its winning streak to three games.

UT (15-9, 5-6 Big 12) has not won more than two games in a row since stringing together seven victories from Nov. 26 to Dec. 17.

Longhorns look to turn it around at home against Cowgirls

Daily Texan  Thu, 02/09/2012 - 11:22pm

It’s been more than two weeks since the Longhorns won a game and, with only seven regular season contests left on the schedule, wins are at a premium.

Texas’ last victory came on Jan. 25 against the Big 12’s last place Missouri Tigers. Since then the Longhorns have dropped four straight and are falling further and further from the NCAA tournament picture.

They will get another chance to prove they’re still worthy when they take on Oklahoma State, who also find themselves on the tournament bubble, Saturday at the Frank Erwin Center.

Longhorns break losing streak, take down Tech

Daily Texan  Sat, 02/04/2012 - 11:00pm

The Longhorns figured out one way to avoid their late-game woes: blow out the other team.

Texas cruised past Texas Tech, 74-57, on Saturday night at the Frank Erwin Center.

After weeks of crushing defeats in the final seconds to some of the best teams in the country, the Longhorns took out their frustrations on the Big 12's worst.

"When people are getting after you, you need to fight back," said Texas coach Rick Barnes.

Even behind a 23-point effort from its leading scorer Chassidy Fussell, Texas was unable to defeat Kansas State Wednesday night at the Frank Erwin Center.

Kansas State squeaks past sloppy Longhorns

Daily Texan  Thu, 02/02/2012 - 12:20am

Inconsistent guard play and their inability to establish an offensive identity in the post cost the Longhorns an opportunity to move up in the Big 12 standings at the Frank Erwin Center Wednesday night.

Texas turned the ball over 21 times and got only 10 points from its bigs as Kansas State moved to 7-2 on the road with a 64-55 victory at the Frank Erwin Center on Wednesday night.

Chapman plays best game of season, emerges as senior leader

Daily Texan  Mon, 01/23/2012 - 12:14am

Clint Chapman had his best game of the season against one of the best teams in the conference Saturday afternoon, but even that wasn’t enough to help the Longhorns pull out the upset.

And don’t tell him that his performance is worthy of a moral victory.

“It’s hard to take any positives out of something like this because this is a program built on winning,” Chapman said.

Daily Texan  Thu, 01/19/2012 - 12:31am

Despite struggling to pull away all night, Texas was able to capitalize when it mattered most and come away with a big conference win at the Frank Erwin Center on Wednesday.

After a couple clutch Iowa State free throws tied the game with 17.2 seconds to go, senior guard Yvonne Anderson was able to find a hole in the Cyclones zone and hit an off-balance floater to give the Longhorns the 62-60 lead with just a half second left in the game.

Big 12 conference among country's best

Daily Texan  Tue, 01/17/2012 - 11:36pm

The current Big 12 format will be in place for this season only, a shame considering the conference is among the most competitive nationally from top to bottom.

The Big 12 is the only league with three teams in the Top 10: No. 3 Baylor, No. 5 Missouri and No. 7 Kansas.

BU and Mizzou are each 17-1, and the Bears’ first defeat came against the Jayhawks Monday night at Allen Fieldhouse.
