President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder have a lot in common, so it's no surprise they socialize outside the office.

But the distance between the White House and the Justice Department has long been a touchy subject, and the Obama-Holder relationship is beginning to attract criticism.

Holder Announces Sept. 11 Trials In U.S.

Attorney General Eric Holder is expected to announce Friday that the U.S. will try Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other Guantanamo Bay detainees in New York.

He also is expected to say that five others, including a suspect in the bombing of the USS Cole, will face a military commission.

Sept. 11 Suspects To Be Tried In U.S.

Five Sept. 11 suspects, including the alleged mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, will be brought to the U.S. to stand trial, the Justice Department will announce Friday.

NPR has learned that Attorney General Eric Holder has decided that the suspects should be tried in the Southern District of New York.

Probe Begins Into Whether CIA Abused Detainees

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced Monday that he appointed a veteran prosecutor to lead a review into possible abuse of detainees by the CIA.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John Durham will determine if any CIA officers or contractors should face criminal charges.

Holder said he realized that his decision would be controversial, and he was right.



 

CIA Inspector General's Report Released

Attorney General Eric Holder is appointing a prosecutor to look into the legality of some of the CIA's interrogation of detainees.

The CIA's inspector general said interrogators went beyond what was authorized under Justice Department legal memos, which have since been withdrawn and discredited.

ACLU Favors Review Of CIA Interrogations

A Justice Department prosecutor will do a "preliminary review" of possible criminal cases stemming from CIA interrogations of suspected terrorists.

Attorney General Eric Holder made the announcement Monday. The American Civil Liberties Union has been pushing for an investigation like this.

It's waged a five-year legal battle to uncover misconduct in the name of national security. NPR's Peter Overby reports.
