A Question for Obama on that Tax Cut

Writing for the Wall Street Journal, William McGurn reminds us what happened the last time a Democrat presidential candidate promised to cut middle-class taxes.

That’s right, Bill Clinton forgot his pledge even before taking office and went on to raise taxes on almost everyone.

Is there any reason to expect a repeat from a Barack Obama administration?

Dick Morris has an interesting column pointing out that Barack Obama’s center-ward drift could mean very little once he has to work with a liberal Democratic Congress.

Morris reminds us that the two most liberal (and ineffective) years of the Bill Clinton presidency were his first two when a Democratic-controlled Congress forced him to pursue a liberal agenda instead of the centrist one on which he ran for president.

One might even wonder if a McCain presidency, combined with a Democratic Congress, offers the best chance for a bipartisan-yet-still-decent emissions-reduction bill to get enacted and stay enacted.

(Think Schwarzenegger and health care in California.) I’m skeptical, but it’s not an outlandish argument.
