Death Sentences Drop To Historic Lows

A new report says just 78 offenders were handed capital sentences this year, marking the first time in more than three decades that fewer than 100 people were sent to death row.

Some experts say Americans are becoming ambivalent or opposed to the death penalty, but others note that may be because there is another option: life without parole.



 

Anti-Gay Atmosphere Permeates Uganda

On Tuesday, a judge in the East African nation is expected to decide whether a tabloid may continue to publish the names of gay men and lesbians.

The decision comes as the Ugandan Parliament is considering a bill that would impose the death penalty on gays.

U.S. Won't Seek Death Penalty For Ghailani

Counterterrorism officials took a careful look at Ahmed Ghailani's case and decided not to seek the death penalty. Ghailani, the first Guantanamo detainee to be brought to a U.S. civilian court for trial, is charged in the 1998 bombing of two U.S. embassies in Africa.

Because the brothers’ identical features made it impossible for officers who were testifying to point out which one had been found with the key, Judge Ibrahim said she had no choice but to acquit both men.

She called the ruling “a very unique case.” Court officials familiar with the case could not be reached for comment.
