Photog makes office home

Daily Texan  Wed, 12/07/2011 - 12:33am

The most significant end of my college career is the end of my time at The Daily Texan. I learned more working for the Texan than I did in any class at UT.

My best friends worked here, and I can’t even begin to think about where I would be without the experience I gained from working at the best college newspaper in the country.

The Asteroid Shop takes to the road

Daily Texan  Wed, 11/16/2011 - 12:16am

What began as a new venture to break away from comfort metamorphosed into a serendipitous collaboration of like-minded musicians for local band The Asteroid Shop.

Spearheaded by lead vocalist and songwriter Eric Brendo, the local ambient-rock band released their first full length album last month and is currently on tour.

The self-titled album exhibits a strong sense of juxtaposition between great loves and loss, success and failures, and beauty and flaws in the band’s soft instrumental sound and

Daily Texan  Tue, 10/11/2011 - 11:35pm

You’ve probably heard one of Friendly Fires’s songs whether or not you’ve heard of the band themselves.

For the past couple of years, their songs have acted as the backing tracks for all sorts of advertisements for companies such as Nintendo and Gucci.

The English alternative funk trio is currently on tour with Theophilus London in support of their newest album, Pala.

Daily Texan  Thu, 09/15/2011 - 10:36am

Striking it big with its MGMT-sampling song “The Opposite of Adults,” genre-bending alternative hip-hip duo Chiddy Bang is about to release its first full-length album after a year filled with mixtapes and single teases.

After a chaotic show at SXSW earlier this year, Chiddy Bang said it hopes to bring the same energy to ACL and its aftershow with Skrillex at La Zona Rosa.

Playing mama to a staff didn't happen by design

Daily Texan  Fri, 08/12/2011 - 11:58pm

Editor’s note — A 30 column is a chance for departing permanent staff to say farewell and reflect on their time spent in the Texan’s basement office.

The term comes from the old typesetting mark (-30-) to denote the end of a line.

I remember sitting on the Forty Acres bus when I checked my voicemail and heard back from The Daily Texan saying I was hired.

I was so excited I missed my stop. I called my dad immediately.

“If I know you at all, you’ll run that place one day,” he said.

Groups hopes to receive enough donations for debut release

Daily Texan  Fri, 07/15/2011 - 3:37pm

With only about $500 and three days left to meet their pledged goal of $3,500 on Kickstarter.com, local indie rock band Major Major Major can almost take a breath of relief.

If the band meets their goal (which from the looks of it, they will), the fundraised money will pay for parts of their recording session for their debuting, self-titled EP, which is set to release this fall.

UT alumnus finds fame in world of rap

Daily Texan  Fri, 07/01/2011 - 1:03pm

In a fame-hungry generation saturated with entertainment realities such as MTV, American Idol and YouTube, it’s not hard to get your five seconds of stardom.

But whether there’s talent to make it beyond the five-second marker, now that’s the bigger question.

For UT corporate communication alumnus, Roosh Williams, however, his talent in rapping has proven he's not just another wanna-be rapper.

Texas Exes to be led by its first black female president

Daily Texan  Wed, 06/22/2011 - 11:20pm

Attorney and lobbyist Machree Gibson will take over as the first black woman president of the Texas Exes on July 1.

This past year, she served as president-elect of the powerful and independent UT alumni organization.

Current president Richard Leshin, who will serve as the chair of the organization when his term as president ends, said he thinks Gibson is a prime fit for the volunteer leadership role.
