Ruta Maya used to be the hippy-iest of hippy coffee shops, reveling in its far South Austin zipcode by booking a bunch of reggae acts on a regular basis.
Lately, it’s upped its venue cred by jumping onto the Casual Victim Pile dogpile, creating a real DIY space to go along with its couches, art displays, and comfortably caffeinated clientele.

The European Court of Justice says Dutch authorities have the right to ban coffee shops from selling pot to foreigners.
The idea is to stop foreigners from entering cafes that sell pot. Officials were tired of drug tourists coming to town just to get high.

Women in sparkly bathing suits sell sparklers and other items at Near Naked Fireworks. One resident told the Tacoma News Tribune the business is tacky and inappropriate, especially near a public park.
The owner says local coffee shops outfitted their baristas in bikinis — he's just borrowing the business model.
