Researchers re-create waves

Below the surface of the ocean, strong waves shape the continental slope and contribute to climate changes.

UT researchers have constructed a saltwater tank to simulate these "internal waves" along the ocean floor.

Sand-grain-sized particles in the water allow the researchers to follow the water's movement using video cameras.



 

Shallow Water Ahead for Panama Canal

The Panama Canal is the shortcut between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. As the Earth's climate changes, the canal will face changes, too.

It depends on rain, not seawater, to fill its locks, and changes in rainfall might mean the canal could run out of water.

Costa Rica's efforts to minimize global warming have made it especially vulnerable to climate changes.

Because it relies on hydroelectric power, even a tiny shift in rainfall patterns could leave the country without enough water to meet its growing demand for electricity.
