Census Bureau: Poverty Rate Rises Past 2009 Level

The nation's overall poverty rate climbed to 15.1 percent last year. That's up from 14.3 percent in 2009 — which means 46.2 million Americans were living in poverty in 2010.

AP - The Census Bureau reports the number of Americans in poverty jumped to 15.1 percent in 2010, a 27-year high.



 

290,000 Jobs Added In April, But Unemployment Rate Goes Up

The good news is that we added 90,000 jobs more than expected, and this job growth is the most in four years.

Still, the unemployment rate went up and could stay there for a while. Because if our economy keeps growing and we continue to add more than a quarter million jobs per month, but can’t push down the unemployment rate…what are we supposed to do?

If the count is more accurate and efficient than usual this year, it may be due to the economy. Thanks to the recession, the Census Bureau has more highly qualified people helping to carry out the count than ever before.

Now, work is getting done faster than anticipated — and under budget.
